This trail only includes pubs which are both wheelchair accessible and have accessible toilet facilities.
Starting in the Waterend Barn ๐
, a pair of glorious 16th and 17th century barns moved to St Albans in the 1930s and 1960s for use as tea-rooms, and now a Wetherspoon's pub. There are several drinking areas and a wide range of cask ales on offer. A special Cask Ale Showcase starts on Thursday. Food is available all day with early morning breakfasts.
WALK 1 minute. In front of you as you exit the Waterend Barn, you'll see the Saint & Sinner ๐
.
A recently converted into a pub by McMullens, this is a significant and careful 2023 conversion of a Grade II* listed building. The grounds were once extensive, now being occupied by the nearby Alban Arena, the Magistratesโ Court and Waterend Barn.
There's a comfortable and modern feel with several dining areas and a wide menu which also features non-gluten and children's options. Brunches are available from 8am Mon-Sat and 9am on Sunday. Two McMullen cask ales are on handpump, sometimes including a Mac's seasonal brew. The pub specialises in cocktails. The bar opens at 10am. Weekend Live music and DJ events are being developed. Have a game of shuffleboard!
WALK 2 minutes. Turn right into St Peter's Street, cross the road and reach The Beech House ๐
.
A modern bar and grill style pub with an open plan restaurant to the rear, a drinking area to the front and some seating on the pavement outside. The bar has a single handpump and real ale is sometimes available.
WALK 5 minutes. Turn left out of the Beech House and walk down St Peter's Street. Before the museum, cross the road and continue on St Peter's Street, which turns in Chequer's Street, until you reach the junction with London Road. The Peahen ๐
is the large pub on the opposite corner.
Once a coaching inn and now one of the two McMullen's pubs in the City Centre, having been owned by the Hertford brewer since 1936. Refurbished in 2024, it is a stylish, food-oriented pub which tends to attract a younger clientele, particularly in the evenings. The interior is decorated in a modern style, while outside a pleasant upgraded yard features lots of seating and a table-tennis table. Alongside the selection of McMullen's cask ales, a number of the brewery's craft keg offerings are also available.
WALK 3 minutes. On leaving the pub, cross Holywell Hill towards Cote, go around that corner and continue West along High Street. At the crossing you'll find a small alleyway on your left next to the Cancer Research shop called "Waxhouse Gate". Continue down this path toward the Cathedral and you'll come to The Mad Squirrel Tap ๐
on your right
A modern pub showcasing local beers, with a great view of the Cathedral. Check out the International Tap Takeover on the Thursday.
