The village of Colney was first recorded in the 13th century, taking its name from the River Colne. The name London Colney, first recorded in 1555, referred to "Colney on the road to London" - indeed, before it was bypassed, this was a very busy route.

The Colney Fox in London Colney

The Colney Fox in London Colney

Our trail begins at the far end of the village, at the Colney Fox 🅐. To get there from St Albans city centre, we recommend the 84 bus. This service will also get you back to St Albans at the end of the trail.

The ivy-covered Colney Fox is a pleasurable refreshment halt which also serves great food. In the 1940's and 1950's the building was originally Tyttenhanger Boys' School, later becoming the Watersplash Hotel named after the local lido and fountain. The lido subsequently closed and the pub was later bought by Bass who removed the fountain.
